What does "atonement" mean? Many westerners assume it's the central doctrine of Christianity, but there are many threads and ideas in Christian history and thinking that have blurred together. The "Jesus died for my sins" concept is only one of those threads. Bloodthirsty God ... God who demands a price be paid ... Punishing God ... God who rejects all humanity unless an exchange has been made ... all of these -- none of these? And how we view God informs what we think is needed in order for humans to be well, be whole, be in relationship with God and the world. Let's dig into this together.
