Creating Space for God’s Spirit

The room is in the round, more or less, and colorful. The large L-O-V-E boxes are standing up on the stage, decorated with flowers. A big table in the middle of the space holds all manner of goodies for our CommunionAgape Feast.

  • “Grace” by U2 plays
  • A young Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell three times

Worshiping with Our Children

  • DeAnn leads our children in talking about who God is

What do you think God is? Many people think and say many things about God. Maybe God is angry at people, or maybe God is nice, or maybe God doesn’t care about the world, or maybe God cares about every person and every animal and every part of the universe. At Journey, we believe that God is Love. That’s why we follow what Jesus said, that the very best things anyone can ever do are to love God and love people. When we do that, we are closest to God. Let’s thank God for that.

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • Rick introduces scriptures showing three different ideas of who God is
  • Margaret reads from the Jewish prophet Ezekiel

This is what I, the Eternal Lord, have to say to the land of Israel:
The end! The end has arrived
for the four corners of the land and everyone in it!
and I will release My wrath against you.
I will judge you according to your ways.

  • David H. reads from the Lord speaking to Moses, in the book of Exodus

My anger will be kindled against the people when that day comes. I will turn away from them and hide my face from them on account of all the evil they have done; they will become easy prey for their enemies, and many terrible troubles will come upon them, and they will say, ‘These troubles have come upon us because our God is not with us now!’

  • Joe G. reads from Ephesians 2

God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which God loved us, even when we were spiritually dead because of all our sins, made us spiritually alive, together with Christ, and God has raised us up into heaven with God, so that in the ages to come God might show the immeasurable riches of God’s grace in kindness toward us, not because we deserve it, but because we have faith in Christ, we are given grace from God.

  • Bri leads discussion on what we think of when we hear the word “grace”

Answers given include: freedom, compassion, love, forgiveness, elegance, undeserved, connection, favor, humble.

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Brooke S. reads from the Jesus story called Matthew, chapter 5

Jesus taught his followers, “You have heard the teaching, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies, and ask God to care for those who are cruel to you; that is what children of your Parent in heaven are like. Your Parent in heaven gives the sun to shine on those you'd call evil, and those you'd call good, and your Parent in heaven sends rain to sustain those you’d call evil, and those you'd call good. This is what your heavenly Parent is like – not measuring ‘good’ or ‘evil’ – so if you want to be like your Parent, love those you have decided are your enemies.”

  • Rick talks
  • Rick invites us to go to the Communion table as a symbol of God’s Self-giving and a reminder of God’s abundant love
  • Renee plays “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
