Today's Program

Creating Space for God’s Spirit

The room is peaceful, restful.

  • “Learn to Be Still” by Don Henley plays
  • A Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell

Worshiping with Our Children

  • A Journeyer reads two quotations

A thought from French composer Claude Debussy: “Music is the silence between the notes.” And another from 6th century BCE Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu: “Music in the soul can be heard by the universe.”

A Journeyer leads our children in talking about rest. There are different reasons to rest, and different ways to rest. A good night's sleep after a day's school and play, or a nap like the little kids, or even just taking a breath. [everybody breathes] In music, the silence between the notes is called a rest. Sometimes we need to be silent and rest after finishing one thing and before starting the next. Sometimes that's when we can hear God best.

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

  • Announcements – how Journey is God’s Hands in the world
  • Margaret welcomes us, talks about series
  • Say hello to someone near you
  • Take a breath...
  • Time of silence

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

  • A Journeyer reads Psalm 104:30

When You send forth Your spirit, [we] are created; and You renew the face of the ground.

  • Time of silence
  • The same Journeyer says an offering prayer
  • Margaret sings “To Make You Feel My Love” as the ushers pass the baskets

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Rick talks
  • We all sing “It Is Well with My Soul” with recorded accompaniment

Go in Peace and Rest

  • A Journeyer reads John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

  • The same Journeyer dismisses us
  • “Learn to Be Still” plays again as folks clean up the room
