Today's Program

Creating Space for God’s Spirit

The room is in the round. A central table holds the Journey lamp, surrounded by rocks and candles. All four panels are around the edges of the room. There is a music stand and a stool for today’s guest speaker, Sarah Macias.

  • “Carry On” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young plays
  • A Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell

Worshiping with Our Children

  • Margaret leads our children in talking about caring for others

Where do you live? Do you know your address? Do you know your neighbors? The Bible says that when God made people, God put them in a garden, and that they were given a special job: to care for the Garden of Eden. Jesus said that we are given a special job: to give his love to the world where we are. So, what if your Garden of Eden is your house? Or your street? Or your school? Or your friends? Let’s ask God to help us be open to that.

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • Judi reads from 20th-century German psychologist, psychoanalyst, sociologist, and philosopher Erich Fromm

There is no meaning to life except the meaning a person gives their life by the unfolding of their powers.

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Steve M. and Sally B. read from the early Christian scripture called the Gospel According to John, chapter 14

Jesus is speaking with his students at their last supper together:

“Trust me: I am in my Father, and my Father is in me. And if that’s too abstract to understand, trust what you see—the powerful things you and I have done.

“Anyone who trusts me will not only do what I’m doing, but will do even more powerful things, because I am giving you the same work to do that I’ve been doing. You can trust this.

“From now on, whatever you ask for from me and the Father, I’ll do it. I mean it. Anything you need, if it’s part of what you and I and the Father have done, I give you the power to do, from now on.”

  • Sarah Macias talks

Go Out to Serve with Wild Forces

  • Brian S. leads us in a closing prayer

Let’s read this poem aloud together; it is by 13th-century Italian monk and mystic Francis of Assisi. It will be our closing prayer today. It’s called “Wild Forces.”

There are beautiful, wild forces within us.

Allow them to turn the mills inside you,
and fill
sacks
that feed
even
Heaven.

Amen.

  • Brian S. dismisses us
  • “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night plays as folks clean up the room
