Today's Program

Creating Space for God’s Spirit

The room is in the round, with the Journey Portrait of Jesus banner and lots of color, ease, and small tables here and there. It’s a bit scattered in a good way.

  • “Express Yourself” by Charles Wright plays on loud enough to be heard
  • A young Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell three times

Worshiping with Our Children

  • A Journeyer leads our children in talking about being who you are

What do you like to do the very best? Play? Run? Eat? Watch a movie? Help with something someone’s doing that looks like fun? Sleep? The Bible says that God created each of us, and that we can be with God in every kind of way there is. Singing? Dancing? Laughing? Crying? God hears and sees and loves us no matter what we’re doing. This week, remember that whatever you're doing, God is with you, loving you. Let’s thank God for that.

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

  • Announcements – how Journey is God’s Hands in the world
  • Renee welcomes us, talks about series
  • Say hello to someone near you
  • Take a breath...

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • Music plays
  • Two Journeyers read from the the Hebrew scriptures, Psalm 116

I love God, for God has heard my voice, and my crying out,
Because God has turned God’s ear toward me.
Therefore, I will appeal to God as long as I live.
The snares of the end surrounded me,
The pains of darkness grabbed me;
I suffered, anguish, panic.
Then I called out to God.

God is gracious, and good.
God shows mercy and kindness.
God protects the small; when I had sunk low, God saved me.

What can I give back to God for all God’s extravagance toward me?
I will lift up a cup filled with celebration,
And trust the name of God.
I will offer to you, God, a sacrifice of thanks.

  • Nathan Brown talks and shares his poems

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

  • A Journeyer says an offering prayer
  • A song plays as the ushers pass the baskets

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Nathan talks and reads more poetry
  • Leslie encourages everyone to find our own way to connect

What is it like to connect to God and your soul and not worry about what the correct, religious, “right” way to do that might be? Music? Art? Poetry? Work? Laughter? Irreverence? What is your way to connect to God and your soul? If it’s not poetry or music, what is it? It’s who you are and what you do.

Go Out to Express Yourself

  • A Journeyer leads us in a closing prayer
  • The same Journeyer dismisses us
  • “Express Yourself” by Madonna plays as folks clean up the room
