Today's Program

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

The room is shining. Communion stations of many kinds, all around.

  • “Someone Like You” by Van Morrison plays
  • A Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell
  • Cory (E) and Leslie (L) make announcements

Worshiping with Our Children

  • A Journeyer leads our children in talking about how when I’m smiling, other people might feel happier, and I feel happier; when I’m angry, other people might feel angry, and I may feel more angry or sad. When we feel God’s love in us, it shines out of us, and shines on other people too.

Welcome and Breathe

  • Leslie welcomes everyone
  • Take a breath...

God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • A Journeyer reads from the Jewish scriptures, the book called “Beginnings”

God spoke to Abram, a man God had come to, and made him a promise:

“Leave your country. Leave your extended family. Leave your ancestral home. Go out into the world, and trust that I am going to show you a new land to live in. If you do this, get ready – I will turn you and your people into a great nation. I will give you what you need. I will spread the word about what you and your people are becoming by being with me. And I will give you many gifts and treasures.

“I am doing this in order for you to bless the world around you. So that you will give the world many gifts and treasures.”

And so, Abram left his home, and began this new life, just as God had told him to.

  • Another Journeyer reads from the Jesus story called Mark

Jesus, appearing after his resurrection to his followers, gave them these instructions:

“Go out into the whole world. Tell everyone the good news of what you’ve seen and felt and known. And because of what you share, my people will fight evil and win, speak powerfully in ways they can't understand, be able to withstand what is intended to hurt them. They’ll touch sick people, and the sick people will get well.”

  • Journeyer Michael Hawthorne leads us in singing

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

  • A Journeyer says an offering prayer – from where he/she is in the room. Just stand up and say it. Loudly.
  • Michael Hawthorne sings as the ushers pass the baskets and take them to front

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • A Journeyer reads from the Jesus story called Matthew, in a long teaching called The Sermon on the Mount

Jesus said to the crowd, “You're like salt for the earth. You give life flavor. Don’t lose your ability to make life better! If salt loses its flavor, it isn’t good for anything. It gets thrown out. You're like light for the world. You're like a city, up on a hill. At night, everyone can see its light from all around. It can't hide. No one takes a lamp in their house and hides it under a bowl. They put the lamp on a stand, and it gives light to the house. So, be like that. Let the light inside you shine, so that people around you will see what God is doing.”

  • Rick talks via Skype
  • Rick introduces Communion
  • Communion – many stations, where we feed each other bread and juice
  • During Communion, movie clip from “Someone Like You” plays

Go Out to Serve with Courage and Grace

  • A Journeyer leads us in a responsive prayer

Leader: God, we know you are at work the world we’re in. [Wait ten seconds.]

Journey: God, we hope you're at work in each of us, and all of us. [Wait ten seconds.]

Leader: God, we see you changing people and bringing them healing, and joy, and hope. [Wait ten seconds.]

Journey: God, we see – maybe – that you're doing that in and for each of us, and all of us. [Wait ten seconds.]

Leader: God, we see that you are changing people all the time. Making them more loving, more courageous, sending them into the world to change it so that it looks like you want it to. [Wait ten seconds.]

Journey: God, we do see that you are changing us all the time. Making us more loving, more courageous, sending us into the world to change it so that it looks like you want it to. [Wait ten seconds.]

Leader: God, we see you in our schools and offices and streets and neighborhoods. [Wait ten seconds.]

Journey: God, we see you in our homes, and living rooms, and kitchens. [Wait ten seconds.]

Leader: God, are you really here? Do you really want us to help you? It’s too much to believe. It’s even harder to act on. [Wait ten seconds.]

Journey: Help us. Help us shine. Help us act. Help us do the work. Help us be your people. Each of us. All of us. Bless the world through us. Amen.

  • Same Journeyer dismisses us
  • “Someone Like You” by Van Morrison plays again as folks depart
