Creating Space for God’s Spirit

The room is a celebration, but a serious one. There are two altars with a basket for placing forms.

  • “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles plays
  • A Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell 9 times

Worshiping with Our Children

A Journeyer leads our children in talking about Journey. What is the name of this faith community? They answer. Whom do we follow; do you know? These are Journey kids – they know it’s Jesus. What do we try to do? They answer however they answer. Did you know every single Journeyer is important? And did you know that you're Journeyers? It’s not just your grandparents or parents – it’s you. You are important. Jesus said that the “little ones,” the children and anyone who’s willing to love and trust and create and sing and be brave like a child, are the ones who know God best. So, you're our teachers, little Journeyers! And what every Journeyer does is important and special. I’m very grateful for each of you! Let’s thank God for that; let’s pray.

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

  • Announcements – including passing out forms again and explaining – yes, turn them in. Just do it. Don't wait and think about it. You evolve and Journey evolves and if it needs to change, of course it can; but now is the time to act.
  • Renee welcomes us, talks about series
  • Say hello to someone near you
  • Take a breath...

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • Momentum video clip plays
  • A Journeyer reads two quotations

A quote from Broken by contemporary American writer Lisa Jones:

“To begin a scary task is to be close to finishing it. In fact, beginning takes more courage than anything else, because once you make contact with the forces of nature, your most practical and clear-eyed self emerges.”

And another from 20th-century Canadian pastor and author Basil King:

“Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid.”

  • Bethany leads a brief discussion on what it’s like to be afraid to move forward – and what it’s like to feel the momentum shift when we step out and act in faith and courage
  • Renee leads us in singing her original song "Let the Journey Unfold"

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

  • Two Journeyers read from I Corinthians

Reader One:

From the first letter by the early Christian leader Paul, to the Jesus people in the Greek city of Corinth, Journeyized version:

If I can have the most important conversations in the world, but I do not act with God’s Powerful Love, I’m noise. Clanging. Useless.

If have the ability to understand the deepest mysteries about God’s Powerful Love, but I do not act on that understanding, I am nothing.

If I come to Journey gatherings, go on Mobile Loaves and Fishes runs, care for our kids, help with worship, or give lots of money to Journey, but God’s Powerful Love are not at the center of it, I have accomplished nothing.

Reader Two:

When I move, speak, act, and give with God’s Powerful Love, I am patient. I am kind. I am not jealous. I don't brag. I’m not arrogant. I’m not rude. I do not insist on getting my way. I am not grumpy. I am not resentful. When I move, speak, act, and give with God’s Powerful Love, I don't find joy when wrong happens; I am happy when truth happens.

When I move, speak, act, and give with God’s Powerful Love, I can carry anything. I can believe the best of things. I can hope for the brightest of things. I can endure anything.

Reader One:

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. I want to know the truth; I turn away from what is only shadow.

Reader Two:

And what I know is truth, is this: Three things will go on forever: believing, hoping, and loving. And the greatest and most powerful of them all is God’s Powerful Love.

So, chase after God’s Powerful Love, and work in God’s Powerful Love … not in what won't last.

  • One of the readers says an offering prayer
  • Renee sings "We Are an Offering" as the ushers pass the baskets

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Greg Downing talks
  • Bones and Shepherd representatives have everyone turn in forms – financial and volunteering; Renee plays music during
  • Renee leads us in singing again

Go Out to Serve with God's Powerful Love

  • A Journeyer leads us in a closing reading

Again, from Paul’s first letter to the Jesus people in the Greek city of Corinth; let’s read this together:

When we move, speak, act, and give with God’s Powerful Love, we can carry anything. We can believe the best of things. We can hope for the brightest of things. We can endure anything.

And what we know is truth, is this: Three things will go on forever: believing, hoping, and loving. And the greatest and most powerful of them all is God’s Powerful Love.

So, we chase after God’s Powerful Love, and we work in God’s Powerful Love.

Amen.

  • The same Journeyer dismisses us
  • “Here Comes the Sun” plays again as folks clean up the room
