Afterthoughts

by Rick Diamond

"If someone wants to hold onto his life, he should let it go - and he'll find it. If someone wants to hold onto his stuff, he'll lose his life ... What good does it do anyone if they gain everything in the whole world, but they lose their soul?"

We continued our Lent/Yarn worship gathering series this past Sunday, when we hung symbols of the things we're attached to, that blind us, and keep us from being truly able to feel and see God's Shalom in us and around us. What would be yours? Jesus warns his followers that our preoccupations with control and security and possessions makes us blind. It makes us sick. And we miss God's presence us.

It's not the money that's the problem, or the stuff, or the size of the house, is it. Jesus had rich friends and poor friends. It's our attachment to the money, the stuff, the size of the house.

So?

Today's Program

Gathering Our Spirit to God’s Spirit

The yarn extravaganza continues. A shopping cart is in the center of the room; it is filled with all kinds of stuff that we buy and accumulate. Sitting in the middle of that stuff -- upside-down -- is the cross…

  • A Journeyer  steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell
  • “Sell Out" by Reel Big Fish video (DVD) plays
  • David welcomes folks and has us breathe… introduces our Lenten series

Worshiping with Our Children

  • A Journeyer leads our children in talking about how important it is to figure out what we really need to make us happy. It is also important to realize that sometimes we get caught up in wanting everything that we see on the TV commercials and everything that our friends have, and thinking that if we just had all of that, then we would be happy.

From Our Spirit to God’s Spirit

  • Leslie makes announcements
  • A Journeyer reads Luke 12:13-21
  • Renee and the Band lead the congregation in singing “More Than Enough”
  • David has folks attach the objects they have brought to the yarn web above
  • A Journeyer reads Mark 8:34-37 and then leads an offertory prayer

Giving – To Help God Do God’s Work in This World

  • Renee sings Pink Floyd's “Wish You Were Here” (words and images on the screen) as the ushers pass and collect the offertory baskets and bring them to the cross

Telling The Story and Our Story

1 David 12:13-20 (Revised Unstandard Version)

13 And one of the company sayeth unto him, “Master, speak to my greedy punk brother, that he should divideth the family fig tree inheritance with me.

14 And Jesus sayeth unto him, “Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? Why should I get upeth in your business?

15 And he sayeth unto them, “Take heed, take a time-release gel Advil and beware of subtle product placement: for a man's life consisteth pretty much totally in the abundance of things -- especially sparkly, shiny things, which he possesseth.”

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, “The farmland of a certain disgustingly self-obsessed rich man with hair like Donald Trump brought forth plentifully:

17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘How did I get so rich and handsome and have such thick dandruff-free hair… and more importantly, What shall I do, because I have run out of warehouse space whereupon I might continue to bestow my fruits?’

18 And he said, ‘This will I do: I will tear down my regular warehouses and build Super-size Warehouse Plus Malls, and hire an AARP guy in a golf-cart as security; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods and my

hair gel.

19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; your interest is earning interest…you can relax, kick back, take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”’

20 When God saweth how Ralph prospered, he e-mailed his administrative assistant and requested a private meeting with him, and when He saw him He greeted him warmly and said, ‘This night, thy soul need worrieth not about a thing…nothing shall be required of thee. As a matter of fact, if you will just agree to kick in a little of your fruit for the offering plate at Journey I will give you exclusive corporate naming rights to the pool hall which shall immediately and henceforth be called the Ralph Memorial Journey Pool Hall.’  And Ralph said he’d think about it…”

  • Rick talks
  • David has the folks fashion a personal set of eyeglasses from pipe cleaners (that will be handed out), that will help us remember that we are to see the world with new eyes… with Jesus eyes.
