Today's Program

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

The room: the grid hangs, chairs are almost completely in a circle, including on the front boxes of the stage; the curtain closing off the corner by the stage is back further so more chairs can be over there; colored lights as well as the regular lights shine towards the grid. Under the grid is more or less open space.

  • “Revolution 1” (from The White Album) by The Beatles plays
  • A Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell
  • Leslie makes announcements

Worshiping with Our Children

  • A Journeyer leads our children in talking about how sometimes we want to play with only our own toys or make sure the game goes how we want it to go. But sometimes other people have good ideas too, and maybe it'll be even more fun if we listen to each other. That’s what God encourages us to do: listen to each other, share ideas and toys.

God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • A Journeyer reads from Romans 12 (The Message)

The early Christian teacher Paul writes this to a group of Jesus’ followers in Rome:

So, here's what I want you to do, and rely on God to help you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it and do things the way it does. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Be open to what God is telling you, and be open and quick to respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

I'm speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me. The goodness of God. And we all live with each other only because of God’s grace among us. So, it's important that you not misinterpret yourselves as being responsible to – or even able to – be the ones who make sure this goodness happens. It’s not up to you. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by who we think we are, or what we think we’re accomplishing.

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Two Journeyer read from Romans 12 (The Message)

Reader One – from one corner of the room, with no microphone: In that same letter from Paul, he further encourages the followers of Jesus by saying:

If you’re helping someone, just help, don't take over; if you teach, teach what you are living; if you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don't get bossy; if you're put in charge, don't manipulate; if you're called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with the disadvantaged, don't let yourself get irritated with them or depressed by them. Keep a smile on your face.

Love from the center of who you are; don't fake it. Run for dear life from what is wrong; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice being supportive, not at the center.

Reader Two, from another corner of the room, with no microphone:

Help needy folks; be inventive in creating hospitality.

Bless whoever you feel is your enemy; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your friends when they're happy; share tears when they're down. Get along with each other; don't be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don't be the Great Somebody.

Don’t hit back; discover the beauty in everyone. Draw from God’s goodness within you in order to get along with everybody. Don't insist on getting justice; that's not for you to do; you can't see clearly. "I'll do the deciding," says God. "Let me take care of it."
