Today's Program

Creating Space for God’s Spirit

The room is in the round. Today is about reflecting, going within, opening. The new banners — comfort, sight, healing, hope, freedom — are hanging on the stage. The cross is on its side in front of them. The ceiling is hung with blue-white fairy lights, reminiscent of stars.

  • “Phaze One” by Daniel Lozinski plays
  • A young Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell three times

Worshiping with Our Children

  • Rick leads our children in talking about listening.

How do you know if someone is calling you? Right, you can hear a voice, or a name comes up on your phone, or a name pops up on your computer screen. So, how would you know if God were calling you? It might be harder to know if God is speaking to us – unless we learn to listen differently. Some people hear and see God in nature, in the sky, in beauty, or in art. Some people feel God’s presence when people care about each other and help each other. The Bible says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Let’s ask God to help us be still, and listen, and know that God is all around us.

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • Cory, Brian K., and Nathalie read from 13th-century Roman Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas

All things desire to be like God,
and infinite space is a mirror
that tries to reflect God’s body …
But it can’t.
Everything that infinite existence
can ever show us of God
is only an atom of God’s entire being.

God stood behind God’s Self one night,
and cast a brilliant shadow
from which, creation emerged.
Existence mirrors God the best it can,
though how arrogant for any image in that mirror,
any human being,
to think they know God’s will --

For God’s will has never even been spoken.
God’s voice alone would set the world’s wings,
and all creatures upon it, ablaze.
all things desire to be like God –
all things desire to love.

  • Renee leads us in singing “How Great Thou Art”
  • “God Signs” video plays
  • Rick leads a brief discussion about hearing and seeing God

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

  • MS and Randy read from the ancient Jewish hymnbook, Psalms, number 46

God is our shelter and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
So we will not be afraid, even when the earth is shaken
and mountains fall into the ocean depths;
even when the seas roar and rage,
and the hills are shaken by the violence.
Come and see what the Lord has done.
See what amazing things God has done all around you.
The Lord stops wars all over the world;
God breaks bows, destroys spears, and sets shields on fire.
“Stop fighting,” God says, “Let go of your concerns! Be still!
Then you will know that I am God.”

  • Rick says an offering prayer
  • Renee sings “Slow Down” by Chuck Girard as the ushers pass the baskets

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Rick talks, providing a list of alternative translations for the Hebrew text that is traditionally translated as “be still”
  • throw down
  • let fall
  • relax
  • slacken, especially the hands
  • calm your mind
  • do not exert yourself
  • do not make an effort
  • do not remain in anxiety
    • Sabrina leads us in a meditation on God’s instruction to “be still and know”

Be still and know that there are a thousand other things you should be doing right now —
    littering the floor
    crowding the sink
    skulking around your inbox
teetering on the tip of your tongue
    — but they are not you.

    They can wait.

A world from which you are absent rushes on, sparking and grinding under life’s soldering blaze. Defiant to the end, you find yourself in these moments: as a breath turns into two, then a thought, then an intention. Quietly leaning in to one of many moments that will merge into memories of a single lifetime.

Know that there is more —
    to this life
    to your value
    to invest in
    to make room for
    — waiting in the stillness.

In the heartbeat between resolution and ovation, is a quarter rest of blessed clarity – understanding perching on the summit of experience.

Be still and know that I am God.

Go Out to Be Still and Know God

    • Sabrina dismisses us
    • “Phaze One” plays again as folks clean up the room
