Today's Program

Gathering Our Spirit with God's Spirit

A large archway is in the Living Room. Irregular in shape, it is covered with stones, leaves, vines and branches, creating the effect of a grotto in the sanctuary. The wooden cross and some large potted plants can be seen through the arch. To the side of the arch sits a large light box covered in black tape, so only the faintest glimmers can be seen.

"It Works" by Rabia

Would you come if someone called you by the wrong name?

I wept, because for years God did not enter my arms;

then one night I was told a secret.

Perhaps the name you call God is not really God's name, maybe it's just an alias.

I thought about this, and came up with a pet name for my Beloved I never mention to others.

All I can say is -- it works.

  • Sharon B., Kate H., Susan C., Margaret Z., Lisa C./Lesa S. and Nadine R./Caitlin D. (E) and (L) read “A Common Reading” [Each reader will read from where she is in the room.]

Bring many names, beautiful and good; / Celebrate, in parable and story, / Holiness in glory. / Living, loving God.

Hail and hosanna!  Bring many names!

Strong mother God, working day and night. / Planning all wonders of creation, / Settling each equation, / Genius at play.

Hail and hosanna! Bring many names!

Warm father God, hugging every child, / Feeling all the strains of human living, / Caring and forgiving / ‘Til we’re reconciled.

Hail and hosanna! Bring many names!

Old aching God, grey with endless care, / Calmly piercing evil’s new disguises; / Glad of good surprises, / Wiser than despair.

Hail and hosanna!  Bring many names!

Young, growing God, eager, on the move, / Saying “no” to falsehood and unkindness, / Crying out for justice, / Giving all you have.

Hail and hosanna! Bring many names!

Great living God, never fully known. / Joyful darkness beyond our seeing, / Closer yet than breathing, / Everlasting home.

Hail and hosanna!  Bring many names!

Thou who created the world with word, hear me.

and what I have uttered becomes dust in my mouth,

quiet me to hear you speaking the words that will create the world again.
