Today's Program

Creating Space for God’s Spirit

Our bowl centerpiece is on a table in the middle of the space. The room is airy but not cute – we’re creating passageways inside ourselves to give guidance to others. Meditative but also outward-flowing.

  • Hammock's “Cold Front” from the cd Departure Songs plays
  • A Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell

Worshiping with Our Children

  • A Journeyer leads our children in talking about navigation

Do you know how to do things? Like what? Do you know how to get anywhere? Can you get from your living room to your bedroom? Can you go from one classroom to another? People need help a lot – especially in learning new things or finding their way. You can help them – you know a lot more than you think. In your heart you know a lot, too. So don't be afraid to help people find their way. Let’s pray.

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • A Journeyer reads from the poet Rumi

Great lions can find peace in a cage.
But we should only do that
As a last

So those bars I see that restrain your wings,
I guess you won’t mind
if I pry them open.

  • Renee leads us in singing
  • Leslie introduces a video from Bianca Glaever by asking us to think about this: What in this film speaks to you most? It’s full of wisdom.
  • “the Scared is scared” video plays
  • Leslie leads a group discussion about the video: What did you see or feel about something you could learn about life? What does Asa (the storyteller) teach us in the story?

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

  • A Journeyer reads from the Jesus story called Luke, chapter 24, the final section of the book

On the day when Jesus had risen from the dead, two of the followers of Jesus were walking to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking about all the things that had happened. While they were walking and talking, Jesus himself approached and began walking next to them – but they didn’t recognize him.

He said, “What are you talking about?” They stopped and just looked sad. One of them – Cleopas – said, “Are you the only pilgrim in Jerusalem who doesn’t know what's happened in the last week?”

Jesus said, “What things?”

They said, “The things that happened to Jesus from Nazareth, who was a powerful prophet, everyone was following, and God was with him, and our leaders handed him to be condemned to death and executed. We had hoped he would be the one who would set Israel free. And on top of all that, it’s the third day since he was killed, and some women from our group astounded us. They went to his tomb early this morning and when they didn’t find his body there, they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who said that Jesus was alive! Some of our group went to the tomb and found it empty, as the women had said, but didn’t see Jesus.”

Jesus said to them, “Oh, you don't see anything! You're so unaware, and your hearts are slow, and you don't understand what the prophets wrote about.” And he explained the scriptures to them.

  • The same Journeyer says an offering prayer
  • “Cold Front” video plays nice and loud as the ushers pass the baskets

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • A Journeyer continues the Emmaus Story

As they came near the village, Jesus kept walking, as if he were going on ahead. But the two friends urged him strongly to stay – “It’s almost evening and the day’s almost over. Come in and stay.” So he went in, to stay at their house.

They sat down to eat, and Jesus took the bread and blessed it and broke it and handed it to them. And then their eyes opened, and they realized that it was Jesus.

And he disappeared.

They jumped up, and ran back to Jerusalem, and found the members of Jesus’ school and his other followers, and ran in – and the group were saying that Jesus was risen and had appeared to Simon Peter, and the two men told the story of Jesus on the road and at supper with them.
