Today's Program

Creating Space for God’s Spirit

In the middle of the room and the seats is a table. There’s a round bowl on the table that will be the centerpiece of this worship unit. This week, the Communion dishes are near it – the jar with juice, the plate with bread – and Dixie cups. The day is about God hollowing us out in order to make space for Love, for Renewal, for Possibility. Resurrection.

  • “I’ll Take You There” by Staple Singers plays nice and loud
  • A Journeyer steps up to light the lamp and another rings the bell

Worshiping with Our Children

  • DeAnn leads our children in talking about learning

Have you ever had to learn something new? It can be scary, but it can also be exciting! What kinds of things have you learned? Jesus’ followers had to learn new things all the time because he was always teaching them, and some of what he taught was hard to learn, but he said to ask God for help, and God did help. Jesus kept showing them new things, and we get to hear the stories and follow Jesus, too, all these years later. So let’s ask God for help in learning and growing.

Exploring God’s Spirit and Our Spirit

  • Cory, Laurel, and Terry read from a poem by contemporary American writer Christin Lore Weber

God,
Some of us, You will hollow out.
You will make me a cave.
You will carve me so deep the stars will shine in my darkness.
I will be a bowl.
I will be the cup in the rock collecting rain …

You will do this because the world needs the hollowness of me.
You will do this for the space that I will be.
You will do this because I must be large.
A passage.
People will find their way through me.
A bowl.
People will eat from me and their hunger will not weaken them to death.
A cup to catch the sacred rain …

Light will flow in my hollowing.
I will be filled with light.
My bones will shine.
The round open center of me will be radiant.
You will call me Brilliant One.
You will call me Daughter, Son, Who is Wide.
You will call me transformed.

Giving -- To Help God Do God's Work in This World

  • Beth W. reads from the Jesus story called the Gospel of Luke, chapter 24, near the end of the book

[The afternoon of the day when Jesus had risen from the dead], while they were talking about what had happened, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “I give you peace.” They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Why are you doubting? Look at my hands and my feet, and see that it is I, myself. Touch me and see – a ghost doesn’t have flesh and bones, but you see that I do.” And when he said this, he showed them his body – his hands and his feet.

  • Renee says an offering prayer
  • Renee plays as the ushers pass the baskets

Telling The Story and Our Story

  • Bob H. reads from Congressperson John Lewis of Alabama, who was one of the original leaders of the Civil Rights Movement

Jail is not a pleasant place, but jail became one of the ways out. To be arrested, to go to jail when it's unearned suffering, it sent a message. It helped make the person who's suffering better. I felt so good the day I was arrested. … We were using unearned suffering to help move the society, but also not just the larger society, but to help move us as individuals, that you can suffer and you can come out better. I felt liberated. I felt free.

  • Rick talks
  • We share in the transformation of resurrection through Holy Communion

Go Out to Serve with Hollowness and Transformation

  • Leslie leads us in a closing prayer

God,
Some of us, You will hollow out.
You will make me a cave.
You will carve me so deep the stars will shine in my darkness.
I will be a bowl.
I will be the cup in the rock collecting rain…

You will do this because the world needs the hollowness of me.
You will do this for the space that I will be.
Amen

  • Leslie dismisses us
  • “I’ll Take You There” plays again as folks clean up the room
